For understanding what someone’s experience of mental illness is like
- An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison, a moving memoir written by a clinician who also has bipolar disorder. This book helped me see that life can be good even with the disorder.
- Falling into the Fire by Christine Montross, whilst not about bipolar disorder it helped me see how varied and real mental diseases are. She writes with poetic clarity about what seems incomprehensible to people not suffering.
